Tax authorities have made a claim on the Bank stating that monthly minimum balance charges collected by the Bank are to compensate the Bank towards banking services rendered in these accounts where the average balance falls below threshold level(s). The tax authorities contend that these services have been rendered free to customers who maintain balance above these threshold level(s). On this premise they have raised a claim on the Bank on GST payable by the Bank on such free services in all the accounts where the balance is above the threshold level(s). The Bank has appealed against the claim. In case the Bank is required to pay the claimed amount of GST, GST on proportionate basis will be recovered from all CASA accounts where no minimum balance charges have been levied.
